Jack Nicklaus
Private
open 1992
Jack Nicklaus has created a large, sweeping course with great lines of sight. It’s both obvious and complex. On closer inspection, he uses precise bunkering and severe drops into woods and hazards to tighten the landing areas. His greens are large with gentle rolls and offer many hard and easy pin placements.
Playing as long as 7,380 yards from the very backs of the tees, the course will rarely, if ever, be set up that way. Nevillewood’s five sets of tees also allow for a course to be played as short as 5,000 yards from the “red” tees and a manageable 6,322 yards from the ‘members” whites. The wide fairways usually offer a bailout area on one side, most often to the right. The bailout is onto the hillside, leaving the player with a ball above his feet sidehill lie. The other side of the rough often drops steeply off into dense woods that will be played as a hazard. To save time in trying to find the ball, the player will be able to drop within two clublengths of where the ball entered the hazard with a one shot penalty.
Nevillewood is a course unlike any that we have in western Pennsylvania. It will be very good and has a chance to be great, although that determination will be many years in the making. Don’t pass up the chance to see for yourself.
