Course Overview

The Camp John Hay Golf Course is undoubtedly one of the best in the whole of northern Luzon and a golfers favorite not only because of the course layout and terrain which makes each game challenging but because of the beautiful vista of rustic pine trees, manicured greens, flower beds of bright reds and yellow, and the cool mountain air enjoyed during play.

The 18 hole par 69 golf course spans 5001 yards. The course was re-designed by the Golden Bear International using the Jack Nicklaus design for maximum playability. Upgrading of the golf course started in March 1998 and completed nine months after. The fairways were widened and sand capped, making it an all-weather course. Bunkers were re-shaped and added. Tifway 419 grass was used in the fairways and Bentgrass was used for the greens, a new variety call soisu-l were planted in some of the tee boxes. A computerized irrigation system was installed to ensure that only the exact amount of water needed is being used on the course. Three lakes serves as catchment basin for surface water run-off. In the event of heavy downpours, the former course was rendered unplayable due to muddying while the new course boasts the ability to be playable at least 20 minutes after. This is due to a better drainage system and sand capping of the course.

For better mobility and to speed up the game, cart paths have been introduced. The paths also prevent unnecessary trampling of vegetation. The golf cars are battery-operated to maintain the clean air.

Sitting 5,000 meters above sea level, the log cabin design of the Camp John Hay golf club house is a first in the country and is located in the area of the former Mile-Hi Recreation Center. Red cedar, oak and pine wood were used in the exteriors as well as the interior, high ceilings afford the facility with a grand scale but the extensive woodwork also gives it a rustic ambiance with a natural “woody” scent. The architecture is further complemented by the use of Baguio motifs, stoneworks, accessories and accents.

Trees remain a challenge as most of the holes are lined with pines. Bunkers lurk around the way to catch wayward and miscalculated shots. Water in just three holes can give disastrous results with those underestimated drives. The length of the course can easily give one a false sense of ease, enhanced by the cool and lovely setting. But through all the hazards, the very indispensable tool is course management and accurate shots to turn in a good score card.
