The inaugural 2012 season of the PGA Tour Latino America will debut in Mexico with two new events, the Mundo Maya Open and the Monterrey Open. The Mundo Maya Open kicks off the season this week in Merida, Mexico, at the Yucatan Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.

Yucatan Country Club is a beautiful master-plan community in the heart of Merida, with rolling hills and open space conducive to residential, resort, spa, and a spectacular 18-hole golf course. The first-ever, state-of-the-art Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy teaching center in Latin America is also on site.

The historic and cultural center of the Yucatan Peninsula in the city of Merida will have the world golf spotlight shining brightly this week as host of the Mundo Mayan Golf Tournament. This first in a series of the newly developed PGA Tournament Latin America will kick off with a press conference headed by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

“We are excited to extend the reach and depth of our tour to include the rising talents of golfers from the Americas,” said Finchem. The PGALA has scheduled 11 golf tournament events in anticipation of the inclusion of golf in the Olympics hosted by Brazil in 2016.

The Yucatan Country Club will be the PGALA tournament site on its spectacular 18-hole, par-72, 7,295-yard El Jaguar layout. The golf course was named the Best New Course in Mexico after it opened in 2009. Jack Nicklaus created a water wonderland from a landscape known more for its flat, dry topography by reaching a few meters into the porous limestone to fashion 11 lakes, streams, ponds and waterfalls. The course is ready to stand guard against the skills of the PGALA tournament players ready to take on the challenging layout. More than 100 players will participate in the event with 30 minutes of daily play broadcast on the Golf Channel.
