Cougar Canyon Golf Resort Community building boutique hotel

TRINIDAD, Colo. — Construction is underway at Cougar Canyon Golf Resort Community for the new 117 all-suite boutique hotel. This upscale hotel is a Hawthorn Suite Golf Resort product and will operate under the name Cougar Canyon Golf Resort and Spa. The resort complex is the latest addition to Cougar Canyon Golf Resort Community, a multi-use, master-planned development and highly acclaimed Cougar Canyon Golf Links created by the famed Nicklaus Design. Located near Trinidad, Colorado, this neighborhood combines thoughtful land planning, environmental sensitivity, quality architecture, and natural landscape design.

The development team has been planning the lodging component for the past two years. Architect for the project is Ross Small with Architect Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico along with designer Kelley Levesque and Danielle King of Design 5280 from Denver, Colorado. Vince Colarelli with Colarelli Construction of Colorado Springs, Colorado is the contractor. A 3,000 square foot event space will be incorporated into the facility. Special features include a spa, restaurant and lounge, market and gift shop, concierge service, and a business center. Amenities include a swimming pool, hot tub, and fitness center. Completion is expected in the spring of 2009.

The resort decor is described as “Nouveau West”. Eric Seise, Jr., Managing Director for Cougar Canyon Golf Resort Community, describes the look, “We’ve taken a western feel with a contemporary edge. Guest room colors incorporate the history of Trinidad with rich reds captured from the brick-lined streets and black representing the jet coal that is mined here.” Public spaces capture the local surroundings by using earthy tones and natural materials.

The spacious conference center will accommodate events for up to 450 people and has the ability to create six individual meeting rooms. The outdoor deck overlooking the golf course is a scenic setting for any venue. There is also a 900 square foot Executive Boardroom with a private reception area.

An open-air balcony at the spa allows guests to take in the views while waiting for a signature massage. Treatments will utilize products infused with indigenous herbs and natural remedies inspired by native traditions of the region.

The Colorado Grill restaurant and lounge will offer an upscale resort dining experience with a Southwest flair. Alfresco seating on the patio takes advantage of the mild year-round climate. A separate space will be available for private parties.

The resort’s market will serve coffee, pastries, and convenience foods. Sit inside with the morning newspaper or relax poolside. Extended stay visitors can pick up milk, eggs, microwavable food, snacks, fresh fruit and other sundries. A selection of mementos in the gift shop will remind guests of their stay.

Visitors will have access to golf and all community amenities including an 8-mile walking trail with exercise stations, scenic overlooks, and educational kiosks. Hiking is easily accessible throughout the adjacent 3,000 acre nature preserve. Enrichment programs such as classes in art, cooking, crafts, and photography will be added in the future.
