Monte Rei – The Algarve’s new jewel in the crown

New golf course development in the Eastern Algarve, Portugal set to become one of the leading golf resorts in the world

One of the hottest new golf course developments to look out for in 2007 will be Monte Rei Golf & Country Club situated in the unspoiled Eastern Algarve region of Portugal. Surrounded by over 400 hectares of beautiful Algarve countryside, with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean to the south and a back drop of the dramatic Serra do Caldeirao mountains to the north visitors to Monte Rei will experience a taste of the ‘Real Portugal’ with a golf course designed to preserve the natural Algarve landscape, breathtaking mountain and sea views, first class Iberian cuisine and traditionally designed Mediterranean clubhouse and residencies. The Monte Rei experience captivates the natural charm and character of the picturesque East Algarve region and combines it with unrivalled quality both on and off the golf course – all this just thirty minutes east of Faro and one hour west from Seville near the ancient fishing town of Tavira.

The first of two championship golf courses is scheduled to open in Spring 2007, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design measuring over 6,500 meters from the Tournament tees. Meandering over 70 hectors of gently rolling hills and valleys, with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes, the course features a challenging series of eight par 4s, five par 3s and five par 5s in a distinctive and memorable layout. Fairways and greens are boarded by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees adding drama to the landscape. Jack immediately recognised the potential at Monte Rei commenting, “When I design a golf course, my top priority is finding the features such as native trees, grade variations or natural wetlands that can enhance shot values or scenically frame a hole. I let the environmental surroundings shape the holes, so they fit the terrain. I never try and force an idea onto a piece of land and Monte Rei is no exception”. The second golf course will be constructed on completion of the first and will also be of championship standard. In addition the club will feature a state-of-the-art practice facility and teaching academy.

The stunning 4,000m2 clubhouse, set in beautiful landscaped gardens and courtyards, has a style and layout that can be truly described as a ‘Mediterranean Revival’. Its cool magnificent interior, designed by some of the world’s leading architects and interior designers, will offer a welcoming haven after a day’s golf. Food will range from simple snacks to fine dining and will be true to the owner’s vision to create a unique Mediterranean culinary experience. In addition, members of Monte Rei will be able to relax on their own exclusive ‘members club’ floor.

A wide range of properties nestle in a landscape carefully selected for privacy and designed to preserve the natural beauty of the area. The properties range from spacious luxury villa plots within the golf course and residences situated in their own ‘O Miradouro’ Village to high specification terraced apartments overlooking the 18th hole. The homes will be built on larger than average plots and the build density will be one of the lowest of any comparable development in Europe. Over time the resort will also develop a luxury hotel and spa, shopping centre and beach club.

The good news is that access to Monte Rei will not be restricted to members and residents. Tee times will be available to non-members all year round from June 2007 and there is no question that Monte Rei will rapidly become one of the world’s ‘must play’ destinations for discerning golfers.
